Day #2 is much easier to “swallow” than day #1’s analysis. I always try to be brutally honest but in a nice and educational way. I don’t have a problem with sugar-coating anything either. My children have to eat their green stuff cause green means go. Too many taters make them tired. I can always find a tactful way of telling the truth in a sticky situation and God grants me the grace to hold my tongue when I need to. Day #2 is easy? Nope...again my biggest issue with the truth comes from myself...with myself. Why is it I can deal with others so eloquently but am constantly rising to the top of my own enemy list. Jeez, this is definately not what I was expecting from this book but WOW! My self-analysis of the truth is that I may hide the truth from myself and others and live what is not the truth...meaning a LIE! Now how’s that for Sugar-coating the Peas? And just to think...I did it to myself again. I don’t verbally tell a lie...but I hide the truth so that I may hang onto my vices. Funny at how the truth is what I want it to be...& who’s to argue with me? My conscious eventually I presume. The name “solitary refinement” is a message unto itself. I sure don’t need any more people or things to add to the pile of corrections, I am plenty enough for at least 20 people to one cell at this point.

I fall on both sides of the peas and mashed potatoes fence. I don’t always like to hear the truth from others, and I often have a hard time being honest with people even when I know I need to. Being frank with someone or accepting the truth from a friend or family member is not easy. I have told friends the truth when I thought it was important, and sometimes the appreciated it, and sometimes they didn’t. I think the key is to give and accept truth in love. It doesn’t do anyone any good when we tell them the truth unless our motives are correct. Do we want someone to eat their peas because it is good for them, or because it makes us feel better about our own lives? Ouch.

I am a little bit surprised, and continue to be surprised by the fact that people do not engage thrmselves more in the process of analyzing oneself and the environment they are in. Maybe because I study psychology I am more likely to analyze. I don’t know. Like the person in marketing who said that the title would be a turn off for most readers. How surprising! The title to me is very exciting. This book is extrememly helpful and I can’t wait till day 31. The sugar coating truth has really hit me hard. I have a very hard time not doing this in relationships. I am so scared of hurting people’s feelings that i do not really tell them what I think about what they are doing a lot of the time. i rob the Lord of His glory through righteouly rebuking some of my brothers and sisters. This has casued me to stay involved in romantic realtionships for too long (that I know I did not want to be in) and it has caused me to not stand up for myself in times that I knew I was okay and being treated unjustly. I do not know where that stems from, perhaps it comes from a deep desire to be a people pleaser. Perhaps I do not want ot hurt people, but perhaps I want them to approve of me and if I “ruffle their feathers” with a difficult truth, then chances are that I will not receive the approval that I so desire. This definatey will require some deep prayer and a closer look at before day 3. Hmm. I am feeling very challenged already. I love it!

I may say I want people to be blunt with me, but my actions and the way that I accept the truth says otherwise. I tend to take constructive criticism as an insult or a sign that I have done something wrong. Because of this, I sometimes think people feel they have to sugarcoat the truth for me. I want to know that just because they are pointing out my wrong-doing, it doesn’t affect our overall relationship.

For me not to sugarcoat the truth, I need to hear it is okay. It is important for me to know that what I’m saying will not put our friendship in jeopardy. Therefore, my constant need to be accepted has prevented me from letting people know what I need or want. I don’t let people know how I really feel sometimes because they might get angry and tap into my insecurities by making me feel I don’t deserve their friend-ship. So I hint around and somewhat tell them what bothers me, but I never come out and say it. In doing that, I set them up to fail. The moment I start sugarcoating the truth, I put our relationship in danger.

If I had made it easier for people to approach me with the truth, there would have been fewer tests and failures I had to overcome. The truth has always allowed me to go farther and do more, but for some reason we all want to avoid the pruning process of life. Yes, we do have to draw a line between tactfully stating the truth and sugar-coating the truth. However, we need to make sure our ambiguous approaches don’t dangle bait and set traps for you, me, or anyone else to fail.
